Which One You Have
"Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28)
Compassion fatigue and the wound of compassion are not the same thing, and confusing them will cost you. Fatigue is depletion. It is what happens when the outflow exceeds the inflow long enough that the well runs dry. It is a resource problem, and it has a resource solution: rest, and Sabbath, and food, and sleep, and people who pour into you instead of drawing from you. If you are fatigued, stop reading and go to bed.
The wound is a different thing entirely. The wound is not emptiness. It is the mark that loving somebody left in you, and it does not heal by resting, because it is not a deficit. It is a scar. And a scar is not a symptom of failure. A scar is proof that something got through, that you let it, and that you are still standing here anyway. You can rest a fatigue. You cannot rest a wound. You can only bear it, and let it be bound to Christ, and find out over years what it turns you into.
Know which one you have, because you will spend your energy in the wrong place if you do not. The exhausted person keeps trying to push through a wound that only deeper effort will inflame, and the wounded person keeps trying to sleep off an ache that no amount of sleep can touch. Diagnose it honestly. One needs a bed. The other needs a Savior with scars of his own.
