Daily Grace
One passage. One idea. A few quiet minutes. Short devotional readings for people being formed by grace, written from a small chair beside still water in Falcon, Colorado.

When Your Overflow Makes No Difference
You gave everything you had to a person and it changed nothing.
"So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day." (2 Corinthians 4:16)
You gave everything you had to a person, and it changed nothing. That is the one no one prepares you for. Not the ingratitude, though that is real, and not the criticism. The thing that empties a person out is watching someone you have poured years into walk straight back into the fire you spent those years pulling them out of. And you stand there holding all that love with nowhere to put it, and the question comes, always at night, whether any of it did anything at all.
There is no clean answer for that. But there is this. Jesus poured himself out on people who did not receive it. He wept over a city that would not come to him. One of the twelve men he loved most sold him for money. If effectiveness were the measure, his ministry was a failure. Faithfulness is not the same thing as fruitfulness. They are related; they are not identical. And on the days you can see no fruit at all, the only thing left to hold is that you were faithful, that God saw it, and that he has never once needed your results to justify your obedience.
That is thin comfort, and there is no use pretending it is thick. But thin is not the same as weak. Some nights it is the only thing there is, and it holds, because it is resting not on what your love accomplished but on the God who asked you to give it. Give it anyway. He is keeping account of the pouring, not the yield.
