Daily Grace

One passage. One idea. A few quiet minutes. Short devotional readings for people being formed by grace, written from a small chair beside still water in Falcon, Colorado.

Pull one up. Read slowly. There is no hurry here.

Your Real Congregation

Most of your neighboring will happen where you work, and almost nobody is preparing you for that.

"Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men." (Colossians 3:23)

Most of your neighboring will happen where you work, and almost no one is preparing you for it. You will spend more waking hours with the people at your job than with anyone on earth except the people in your house. You did not choose them. You cannot leave them. They will see you tired, and passed over, and they will see how you talk about the person who is not in the room. That is your congregation.

This is not a call to hand out tracts by the coffee machine. It is something harder and slower. Be the one who is not lying. Be the one who does not join the pile-on. Be the one who does the thing they said they would do. Be the one who apologizes first, and specifically, and without the word if in it. No one is going to ask you about Jesus because you were doctrinally correct at lunch. They will ask you because you were the only steady thing in a place that is not steady.

And one day something will fall apart in someone's life, and they will look around the workplace and decide who to tell. They will tell the person who has, over months, proved safe and honest and kind without an agenda. Make sure they can find you. The long faithful ordinariness of how you work is the sermon your coworkers are actually reading, and they are reading it whether or not you meant to preach it.
