An Invitation to Life

"Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28)

The gospel is not primarily a warning. There is a warning inside it, and it is no kindness to pretend otherwise, but the warning is not the leading edge, and if it is the only thing your neighbor has ever heard from you, then they have not yet heard the gospel. The gospel is an invitation to life. Come, all of you who are worn out. Come, all of you carrying something too heavy. Come, and I will give you rest. That is what Jesus opens with.

Think about how we have often handed this to people. Sign this. Pray this prayer. Raise your hand. Get your name on a list, take a small gift, and go back out into a world that is going to eat you alive. No one followed up. No one discipled them. No one walked with them. Is that what following Jesus has been reduced to?

An invitation is not a transaction. It is the beginning of a relationship with the person who sent it. You do not RSVP to a party and then never go, and you do not treat the moment of saying yes as the whole of the thing. Come to me is an open door into a life lived with him, not a form to be signed and filed. So lead with the welcome, and then stay for the friendship. Invite people to a Person, not to a decision, and then walk beside them through the door.
