The Warmth Is a Byproduct

"For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them." (Matthew 18:20)

A visitor from another church once said a thing worth not putting down. We feel the warmth here, he said. There is an atmosphere of love and kindness and generosity and prayer. We know God is here, because there is a warm and welcoming spirit among your people. And that is the thing every faithful leader actually wants. Not a bigger room. Not a better program. A church that is a house of prayer, breathing unity and love and forgiveness and grace, where people would rearrange their whole week just to be present, because they met God and now want nothing else.

And you cannot manufacture it. You cannot strategize it, you cannot hire it, and you certainly cannot announce it. It happens in exactly one way. People come, and gather, and treasure Jesus together. Not the building. Not the music. Not even each other. Him.

And the warmth is a byproduct. It has never once been the goal, and the moment a church makes the warmth itself the aim, it evaporates, because warmth is heat coming off a fire, and you cannot produce the heat without the fire. So stop trying to generate the atmosphere. Gather with others around Christ himself, prize him out loud together, and let the warmth come off that the way it always has, unbidden, as the natural temperature of people who are facing the same flame.
